Photo of the Day (1.5.09)

Have you figured out yet that I'm a sucker for a portrait of a happy child? And this lovely photograph by muzzman packs a quadruple punch: check out the great smiles on these four little ones, taken in Papua New Guinea. I was initially drawn to the image because it reminded me of an everyday scene in my homeland of Trinidad, but looking at it now, these really could be 4 children anywhere in the world, couldn't they? Lovely shot.

If you've got some great travel shots you'd love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day.

Why do they always insist on using smoke machines in movies? Perhaps it's because there's something inherently "cinematic" about the way smoke plays tricks on your eyes. I find that smoke has a way of softening the edges, shrouding objects in a sense of suspense and mystery. In other words, it's perfect for creating a scene ripe with mystery and intrigue.

I'm enjoying the way AlphaTangoBravo / Adam Baker uses smoke in today's Photo of the Day. Adam captured this great shot in what appears to be Toulouse, France. I love the way the elegant building rises from the evaporating mist in the foreground. Meanwhile the children in the foreground lend a bit of levity. If you look closely you can even see their legs reflected in the water below.

Iceland may sound a bit cold to you, but this photo says the complete opposite to me! I have long dreamed of bathing in the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon (pictured here), but will likely wait until it's a bit warmer to venture north. With its economy in shambles, it is a great time to visit this country.

This and many other fabulous photos from around the world comes to you from t3mujin.

Animal lovers, avert your eyes!

This photo from Theodore Scott shows a matador standing over a dying bull (in an admittedly lop-sided fight) at a stadium in Seville, Spain.

Many consider bullfights to be a rather grotesque spectacle, and I can't say I disagree entirely, but they're an integral part of many cultures worldwide, and seeing one, especially for the first time, is certainly an experience to remember.

Dave and Chi snapped this nice shot of the Eiffel Tower last night during New Years festivities. The tower had been blue for the past six months in celebration of France's rotating presidency of the European Union.

Blue was nice, but it's great to see it back to the original color. Looking closely, is that one stray blue light still shining on the tower? Did someone forget to pull that plug?

Thanks Dave and Chi for another great shot!

I chose this picture as today's Photo of the Day for a few reasons. One is because Jeremy Baumgartner took it at Fisherman's Wharf at Monterey Harbor in California on New Year's Eve, January 1, 2008. Featuring it today seems symmetrical. In a year that has had so many ups and downs, symmetry feels fitting and the photo exudes a stillness and calm.

With the hoopla around New Year's Eve and the upset 2008 has brought, there's a need for calm and the time to consider the stars. If you look above the warm, friendly glow of the sailboats, you'll see Orion's Belt. It's one of the largest constellations and the one that everyone around the world can see. Part of the belt is the three close together vertical stars.

With my voyage to New York early tomorrow morning comes a wealth of baggage -- more than I'm packing in the overhead compartment. A new year. A new beginning. Loss, fear, a look into my heart, passions and life.

In my many travel experiences, I have never been let down by the City, somehow always warm, moving and willing to swallow my worries, loves and hates among its streets, alleys and subways, lost among a sea of merging souls. From the Gadling flickr pool, morrissey's photo of the Manhattan skyline reminds me of why I'm so often there.

Welcome home, young son. Your new future awaits.

I'm loving this image of the "Banana Girl" taken by StrudelMonkey in Cambodia -- the colours are fantastic. Also, you can't help but notice the details: the dirt under her fingernails, on her vibrant dress -- she works hard for her living, selling bananas so that tourists can feed the monkeys nearby. Hard work clearly doesn't dim her lovely smile, though. Beautiful shot.

We've been doing holiday-themed photos all week, but I couldn't resist doing one more. Not when they look as cool as this shot of Rockefeller Center from Flickr user Bernard-SD. The lighting and perspective on this are just awesome. Does this remind anyone else of a vanishing point drawing? I also like the way this photo further emphasizes the height of the building by sandwiching it between two flagpoles.

Have any great travel photos you've taken during your holiday this year? Why not share them with our readers on Gadling? All you have to do is upload them to our Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just use one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

We could all use a little warmth today, I think. This gorgeous shot of a sunset in tropical Cozumel, Mexico pretty much settles it for me: I'm bound for Mexico in the new year. Our photo of the day comes from CaptBrando, who makes Dallas home, but clearly travels a good bit as his photos cover the globe from Sydney to flying planes over Texas. He has some awfully stunning photos of his kids too.

There is something so beautiful about the sky in this photo that words do not suffice. Where does the purple hue come from. That contrasting with the glowing orange is just breathtaking.
